Moussa Koussa, a close associate of Colonel Gaddafi, who defected to escape to London, is providing crucial information to the Coalition. However, William Hague has said that he could still be prosecuted for his crimes. The Libyan rebels have said that he has ‘a lot of blood on his hands’, as he is accused of assassinating political opponents. Moussa Koussa, 59, was the backbone of the Libyan routine, negotiated with nations in the West. In 2003, he played an important part in the prevention of Libya’s nuclear program. However, having been the Libyan ambassador in London, he was expelled for saying that he was determined to destroy the ’enemies of the revolution’. An intelligent man, he remained reserved and secretive about the Lockerbie disaster, and the Scottish government have said that the case is still open and that they would like to speak with him; Libya is believed to have played a role in the explosion of a US aircraft over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, in 1988, killing 270 people. The only Libyan held accountable has released for humanitarian reasons in August 2009. The father of a victim of the disaster has said that this is a chance to find out the truth.
